Before you dig in Florida
Florida's one-call center is Sunshine 811. At least 2 full business days before excavating (10 full business days for excavation beneath the waters of the state); a ticket is valid for 30 calendar days. (source)
811 notifies member utilities only; privately owned lines need a separate private locate, such as a GPR sweep.
Permitting and ground conditions
- Florida's damage-prevention law treats directional drilling and boring as excavation, so every bore needs a Sunshine 811 ticket like any trench. (source)
- Member utilities must mark their lines within 2 full business days of the ticket (10 for facilities beneath state waters), and the excavator must check the system's positive responses before starting. (source)
- Marks show the line to within 24 inches of each side. Inside that tolerance zone, the law requires hand digging, potholing, soft digging, vacuum excavation or a similar method to expose the line, which on a bore means potholing every crossed utility. (source)
- If marks are lost during the job, work near the line stops until it is remarked. If a gas line is hit and gas escapes, the excavator must call 911 immediately. (source)
- Work in a state highway right-of-way needs an FDOT utility permit from the district utility office; city and county roads are permitted by the local road owner. (source)
- Bore pits and trenches 5 feet deep or more need a cave-in protective system (sloping, shoring or a trench box) unless they are entirely in stable rock. (source)

Florida questions
How long is a Florida 811 ticket good for?
30 calendar days from the date it is filed, under Florida Statutes 556.105(1)(c). Longer jobs need the ticket renewed.
Do private lines get marked by 811 in Florida?
No. 811 notifies member operators, which mark their own facilities. Owner-owned lines such as irrigation, lighting or a private water service need a private locate.
